Take a Stand Against Ageism

Ageism rests on the assumption that discrimination against older persons is the norm and acceptable. It manifests itself in both individual and institutional behaviours and decisions that have a significant negative impact on the lives of older persons, contributing to their marginalization and social exclusion. The theme of the 26th International Day of Older Persons is to Take a Stand Against Ageism on 1 October. Learn more about this year’s International Day of Older Persons, celebrated 6 October at UN Headquarters in New York, and our work on older persons at social.un.org/ageing.

Mental Wellness at the Heart of the SDGs

Recognizing the need to address mental wellness on a global scale, the United Nations has included “mental health and wellbeing” in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.4, with the aim of reducing deaths from mental health issues by one third by 2030. It is time to turn this SDG into reality. At a side event held 7 September, ahead of the General Assembly, civil society members, as well as mental health experts discussed implementation of this Goal on a global scale. Read more about the side event and the importance of mental wellness for achieving the SDGs.

Briefing Paper – Growing Need for Long-Term Care: Assumptions and Realities

With increasing age and longevity, the risk of chronic disease rises along with that of age-related disabilities from chronic diseases such as pulmonary disease and diabetes to age-related loss of hearing, sight and movement (arthritis), cognitive illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s to injuries from falls. The incidence rate of disability from each of these varies considerably by country based on longevity and access to appropriate healthcare and rehabilitation services. As the number of older persons continues to grow along with their longevity, the need for long-term care will increase significantly for those aged 80 and over, and in particular for older women who live longer. The number of older persons age 80 and above is estimated to grow from 125 million in 2015 to 434 million in 2050.
